The word "garden" brings to mind thoughts of fantastic and lush plantings of perennial and annual blooms. Or perhaps the word "garden" invokes images of fresh vegetables and fragrant herbs. Regardless of what the word "garden" means to you, to all I'm certain it encourages thoughts of a place for family, peacefulness, and relaxation.

No garden can truly complete however without some degree of flattering and/or fun garden decor. It makes the space truly personal. It can be as simple and unassuming as a birdbath, a stepping stone or two, or colorful containers filled with annuals amonst your perennials. Or it can be elaborate with sculptures, fountains, ponds, and gazebos. No matter what your style and taste, decorating your garden can absolutely add to nature's already wonderful design.

Following are a few tips and ideas from my own garden:

1. Even the smallest of pieces can add interest to areas that usually go unnoticed.

At left is a simple little cement cast of a face that I placed in the center crook of an huge old tree. Suckers (which will be pruned out before turning woody) appear to be sprouting hair.

2. Another cast (approx. 2' tall) of a curious cat (pictured at right), can liven up an unassuming barrel of unblooming clematis.

3. A large saucer-like planter makes a great home for a Hens and Chicks miniature rock garden (pictured at right). These types of plantings always make fantastic conversation pieces. Make sure to thin them out each year though - you can see just how full they can get.
4. Using your imagination can bring a very satisfying level of personal fun to your garden. Pictured at left is a small cast of a pig in amonst my hostas. With a couple of wood stumps, rocks, and a homemade sign (made simply from wood scraps, stakes, a little gorilla glue and paint), I made my very own "Pig in a Poke".
