I've tried using the insanely expensive bird feeders that promise to rid pesky squirrels from taking part in an all-you-can-eat buffet, but in my experience, as well as in yours I'm sure, squirrels can be very clever and tenacious; if they want to get at your unprotected feeder, they will. I've actually had much better success with the very simple and less costly bird feeders (like those above), fixing them to a pole (pole feeders are much easier for us humans to get at to fill/clean than tree hanging feeders), and installing a "squirrel baffle" (also shown above). Squirrel baffles are also available for feeders hung in trees or similar.

*TIP* Remember to keep your bird feeders at least ten to fifteen feet away from trees, fences, or walls. Squirrels have been known to leap up to fifteen feet off a wall to get to a bird feeder.

*TIP* If you're like me and feel the need to include the squirrels, a handful of peanuts (unsalted and in the shell) on the ground (along with a baffle) will keep them busy and happy, and you...guilt free.
